The primary election is over. The dust is settling, and together we all move forward toward the midterm elections. Whether your preferred candidates won or lost their party’s nomination, it’s time unite people who believe in the values of equality and respect and work to make sure we elect candidates who will uphold them. This is a moment in history where the very platform of Democracy is wobbly and in existential danger. The implications of that compel us to look past small differences and lock elbows with our fellow Americans to expand our partnerships. The majority of Americans already share our values. Let’s be Indivisible.
There is a lot at stake in the 2018 midterm elections. There are still families who haven’t been reunited at the border. Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the Supreme Court can still be stopped. Climate change is being ignored, and the President continues to pick a fight with Iran. In order to address these issues, Democrats need a majority in the House and Senate. It’s our job to help put them there.
On the home front, we know that Connecticut has been struggling and that Democrats have often taken the blame for problems that have their roots in the Rowland-era. This will make it a tough election for Democrats, but there is more at stake than local issues. If we want to make sure Republicans cannot alter the foundation of our nation through a Constitutional Convention, it’s important that we prioritize state races, and help boost the Democratic majority in the Connecticut State House. If two-thirds of state legislatures choose, they can force Congress to convene a Constitutional Convention to alter the document in ways that are not easily undone. At stake are marriage equality, a woman’s right to choose, Citizen’s United, and more. These issues are more important than any one candidate.
It’s time to keep our eye on the election ahead of us, and not make the mistakes of 2016. In the coming days and weeks, we will be asking our members to concentrate on getting out the vote and will offer opportunities to do so.
